There's a legal process under way – this is how Hungarian Primre Minister Viktor Orbán typically answered questions about Poland's former Deputy Justice Minister being granted asylum, which he received on his way out of the European Council summit and which were captured by the cameras of RTL and several Polish TV channels.

Telex published an article on Thursday, based on several independent sources claiming that just over a week ago, at a private meeting, the Hungarian Prime Minister hinted that a Polish citizen could soon be granted political asylum in Hungary. It has since been confirmed that the person in question is former Polish Deputy Justice Minister Marcin Romanowski, who is accused of corruption in his home country.

Viktor Orbán received the questions on the case from Polish journalists as he was leaving Thursday's summit. According to EUrologus, they had first tried to speak with him on his way in, but Orbán just threw open his arms and went into the press conference.

On his way out, he stopped for the press and mostly kept repeating that a legal process was under way. He occasionally added that he was not part of it.

At the end he added that relations with the Poles were not good, and that the Polish Justice Minister had "brutally attacked" the Hungarian government in Politico.

Adam Bodnar had told the newspaper on Wednesday that, based on the Polish example, it would be difficult for Hungary to return to the rule of law without a change of government.

Late Thursday, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski on Thursday described Hungary granting an asylum to Romanowski as a ‘hostile act’ and said that his government would announce their decision in response to the move on Friday.
