Fidesz will decide in due time which EP group it will join, but the party's communications director, Tamás Menczer, expects KDNP's György Hölvényi and Hajnalka Juhász to be excluded from the EPP group, which he described as left-wing and pro-war in an interview with ATV on Wednesday morning.
Although it has been speculated that Fidesz may join the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) party family in the European Parliament, Czech MEP Alexandr Vondra, who is a member of this group, recently said that if nobody who is parroting Putinist propaganda has any business being in the ECR. Menczer responded to this by saying that in recent years Fidesz had been called pro-Russian, pro-Turkish, pro-American and pro-German too, but that, in his opinion
“The fact is that Hungarian politics and Hungarian foreign policy have always been pro-Hungarian. When they criticise us in this way – whether from Hungary or from abroad – they are doing so becasue don't understand that Hungarian foreign policy is Hungary-friendly, because these fine people, whether Hungarians or foreigners, have never done anything like this.”
The conversation also covered Péter Magyar, about whom Menczer said that the reason why Fidesz regularly discusses him is
"... because he is a liar, and the truth must be told about anyone who is a liar". He added that "Fidesz supporters know exactly who this man is, they are familiar with the phenomenon. You know, we've seen it all before, Péter Márki-Zay was just like that. We know that he is the opponent, we are aware of his pro-war, left-wing, foreign-funded character, he must be defeated, and that's what we will do.
When it came to the municipal elections and Zsolt Borkai, who is running again in Győr, Menczer said that if he were in Borkai's shoes, he would be so ashamed that he would not only not want to enter politics, but probably would not want to leave his apartment.
The Fidesz Communications Director was also asked whether he had managed to talk to the Rector of the National University of Public Service about why former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, known for his extremist, Holocaust-denying views, had been invited to give a lecture at the institution. Tamás Menczer replied that there were many important ongoing issues, and this was one of them, but that he was currently spending his time focusing on the war (in Ukraine – TN) and the upcoming election.
