"Russia will always be a part of the Central European reality, and therefore we cannot allow ourselves to give up on maintaining relations," Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó wrote on his Facebook page after his talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in New York. Szijjártó in the United States for the UN General Assembly, as was Lavrov.
In his post, Szijjártó wrote that Lavrov and the Russian diplomacy "have always tried to comply with the Hungarian government's requests, and have maintained a positive and open attitude to resolving important issues". According to the Hungarian Foreign Minister, this is also evident in Russia's flexibility in securing oil supplies, which he said is essential for securing Hungary's energy supply.
It is worth recalling that Lavrov had decorated Szijjártó. Many have voiced strong criticism of Russian-Hungarian relations, saying that Hungary has gotten too close to Russia. The Hungarian government usually responds to these accusations by denying friendship with Russia and by insisting on the importance of peace. Szijjártó has also been known to say that the whole of Europe is doing business with the Russians, only they are denying it.
