This year marks the eighteenth time that the Hungarian Confectioners' Association has organised the competition for the Cake of Hungary which is held every year in honour of the national holiday of 20 August.

The theme of this year's competition was "superfood": the confectioners' association was looking for creations in which the participating confectioners used at least two the ingredients from the required categories (berries, cereals, seeds, vegetables). According to the association, the most popular ingredients this year were beetroot, carrots, poppy seeds, pumpkin, blueberries and walnuts.

This year's grand prize went to the creation of confectioner Alfréd Kovács from Vác which was named "Mákvirág" (Poppy Blossom). The pastry chef said that the poppy seed-blackcurrant-black sesame cake “evokes the memory of poppy seed pasta, blackcurrants plucked from the garden and his grandmother offering him freshly baked pastries.”

In the category of sugar-free cakes, the winner was a pistachio- raspberry-rose creation by the name of "Green Raspberry" by Szeged-based confectioners Ádám Novák and László Csonka. One slice of the cake has 232.4 kcal and just 10.5 grams of carbohydrates, which makes it suitable for diabetics.

As usual, the cakes will be available to taste starting on 19 August in cake shops across the country.
