While 59 percent of Hungarian respondents have already gone or have plans to go on holiday this year, 41 percent will stay home this summer, mostly because they can't afford to travel, a survey of a sample of 1,000 people commissioned by Euronews reveals. The survey was conducted using a smartphone app, and is representative across gender, age, education and settlement types of the country.

According to the Opinio survey, people aged 50 and over (56 percent), those living in small towns (47 percent) and those living in eastern Hungary (46 percent) were much more likely than average to say they would not be taking a holiday at all in 2023. Higher education graduates (29 percent) and young people (26 percent and 35 percent respectively) are less likely than average to give up on going on holiday.

Those who said they wouldn't be going on holiday cited financial difficulties as the main reason, with 64 percent marking the "I can't afford it" option. 52 percent of respondents are going on holiday within the country, while 14 percent only plan to travel abroad and 27 percent have plans for both domestic and international trips. 51% of Hungarians who holiday abroad claim they can get by cheaper there than at home. According to the survey, most Hungarian families spend between HUF 100,000 (270 euros) and 300,000 (800 euros) on holidays.
