The Jerusalem Post reported that the Hungarian Prime Minister's Chief of Staff Gergely Gulyás, who is visiting Jerusalem, was greeted by protesters. The minister was giving an interview to the newspaper at the King David Hotel in the capital on Wednesday when 25-30 protesters appeared outside the building, shouting and whistling to indicate how unwelcome the Hungarian minister's presence was.

"Here is a representative of the Hungarian government, which in our eyes represents the most antidemocratic system in Europe. We are very worried because we don't want the same thing to happen here," one protester told the local paper. The demonstrators believe that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's judicial reform plan will lead to a system similar to the one in Hungary.

Meanwhile inside the hotel, among other things, Gulyás said that there was no question that the Hungarian government was functioning democratically, defended the Hungarian judicial system, which he said was often criticised, and said that he believed that Hungary, just like Israel, was often criticised too harshly and isolated.

"A member of the Israeli government told me that he thinks Hungary is in a similar position in the European Union as Israel is in the Arab world," Gulyás said.

The conversation also touched on Sweden's NATO bid, which Gulyás said the Hungarian government opposes because Sweden has often said that there is no rule of law in Hungary.
