Hungarian population is on the decrease: 12 per cent fewer children born in October than last year

According to preliminary data, 7,361 children were born in October 2022, while 10,808 people died. Between November 2021 and October 2022, the number of births decreased by 3.9 percent, the number of deaths by 8.3 percent and the number of marriages by 6.4 percent compared to the same period a year earlier, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) informed Hungarian News Agency MTI.
In October, 7,361 children were born, 978 or 12% fewer than a year earlier while 10,808 people died 1,032 or 8.7% fewer than in October 2021 in Hungary. The natural death rate was 3,447, compared with 3,501 in October 2021, according to the report.
The number of couples married, 4,712, also decreased. It was 579 fewer than in October last year, which means an 11% drop.
According to the report, between November 2021 and October 2022, 88,834 children were born, 3585 or 3.9% fewer than in the previous 12 months.
Between January and October this year, the number of births fell by 5.4% and the estimated total fertility rate per woman was 1.53, compared with 1.58 for the previous 12 months, they added.
According to KSH data, 144,169 people died between November 2021 and October 2022, 12,970 or 8.3% fewer than in the previous 12 months. The number of deaths fell by 9.3% between January and October this year.
The report added that the number of births decreased less than the number of deaths, resulting in a natural decrease of 55,335 persons, which is 15% lower than the 64,720 persons in the previous 12 months.
In the past year, 66,260 couples got married, 4,500 or 6.4% fewer than in the previous 12 months. There were 9.2 live births and 14.9 deaths per thousand inhabitants. Live births were 0.03% and deaths 0.13% lower than between November 2020 and October 2021, resulting in a 0.09% lower natural decrease to 0.57%.
There were 3.4 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, 0.01% higher than in the previous 12 months. The marriage rate was 0.68%, 0.04% lower than in the same period a year earlier, they said.
