With 133 votes of approval, and 27 nos, the Hungarian parliament elected Viktor Orbán for Prime Minister. After his oath, Viktor Orbán gave a speech.

Here are the main points.

On the elections

“Our opponents made sure that the elections happened amidst unprecedented foreign and domestic monitoring. Everyone could see that Hungary is a country without election fraud and election abuse” – he said, while thanking the opposition’s volunteer election monitors for helping defend the country’s good name.

On the decade ahead

“Everything that has happened since 2020, and which is still taking shape today is pointing in the same direction: Europe, the Western man, with Hungary and the Hungarians in it are all in the age of danger” – he said.

“This is a decade of dangers, insecurity and wars. The decade started with the Covid pandemic and continued with war. The war and Europe’s politics of sanctions resulted in an energy crisis. This along with the increased interest rates brought on high inflation, which will result in recession and economic downturn” – the Prime Minister continued.

On Europe

Orbán said that he is seeing a wave of suicidal acts across Western Europe. Such is the program of the big population switch: they are trying to replace the lack of Western-European children with migrants. Other examples include the gender craze or the program of liberal Europe which supersedes nation states and Christianity without replacing them with anything at all.

"We are plagued by economic woes, war, Europe's intellectual weakness and Brussels' political delusion all at once"

– Orbán said.

Brussels is abusing its power every day and wants to impose on us things which are bad for us – Orbán said. According to him, the government keeps making offers of tolerance to Brussels, but there are some things on which we cannot give in. We will protect families and our borders, we will stand up for the idea that the father is a man and the mother a woman, and we will not accept any proposal from Brussels that would destroy our families – the Prime Minister said.

“The only question left then, is: what are we looking for in the European Union? Our dreams.”

According to the Prime Minister, Hungary is looking for the union of equal nations, the democracy of democracies, and the God-fearing Europe which protects people’s dignity. He said that “we are not members of the European Union because of what it’s like, but because of what it can become”. And he promised to fight for this as long as there is the tiniest chance of it becoming reality.

Orbán said that he sees Hungary as a member of the European Union in the next decade, but added that he is looking for allies for its renewal.

On the war in Ukraine and NATO

“The war in Ukraine has been going on for 82 days. It should never have started. Europe has no tools for ending and managing the war in its neighborhood” – he said, adding that in his opinion the EU is convinced that sanctions will bring Russia to its knees.

“On paper, this is possible. But no matter how hard I try to remember, I cannot recall a continental blockade which was successful. We have however, seen examples where those that came up with the idea ended up failing. Let us hope that this time will be different.”

Orbán considers it vital that Hungary is a member of NATO. He said that NATO is a defence alliance, and said that we should not give in to the temptation to carry out offensive actions outside the territory of NATO member states. "It must not be transformed from a defence alliance into a military alliance of war," the prime minister said.

He added that our membership in NATO has never been more important than now, when things continue getting worse. “You need dragon-grass against a dragon, and this dragon-grass is now the Hungarian army which must be strengthened” – Orbán said. He continued by adding that in this war Russia is the attacker and Ukraine is the one attacked, which is why we started a programme of humanitarian help.

“Even though the Hungarians in Ukraine have had some of their rights infringed upon, we are setting that aside, along with the fact that the president of Ukraine and his government have openly interfered with the Hungarian elections and that they supported our opponents. In spite of all this, Ukraine can count on Hungary and the Hungarian government – Orbán said, adding that Hungary is a member of the EU and it is in our interest that it remains so in the decade ahead.

On Hungary’s neighbors

“Our belief in the friendship of the peoples of the Carpathian basin is unwavering”

-he said, adding that he believes this to be the interest of Hungary’s neighbors as well. He added: “We will not fall for any provocations or attempts of division in the future either, and I can assure our neighbors that they can count on us”.

On Hungary’s place in the world

“It is important for a nation to know its place in the world – Orbán continued, adding that today, the reason the Western world is paying extra attention to Hungary is not because of the size of its population, its military, or its economic strength, but because

“Hungary has become the last Christian-conservative bastion of the Western world.”

We see the world differently than the liberal mainstream – he said.

In Orbán’s opinion more and more people see Hungary as the island of peace, the home of freedom, and more and more are following in our footsteps. “We want to give hope to others that national politics is not the past, but the future”.

“Thirty years ago we thought that Europe is our future. Today we think that we are Europe’s future. And we feel the weight of our responsibility”

- he concluded his speech.
