Misunderstandings with Ukraine have been cleared up, Hungarian Foreign Ministry says

“Anita Orbán met with her Ukrainian counterpart on several occasions during the UN High-Level Week, and they were able to clear up the misunderstandings of the past few days,” the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote in a Facebook post, reporting on developments at the UN General Assembly taking place in New York.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs is in constant contact with the Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister about issues affecting the rights of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia, with further developments expected on the matter in October, they said. They added that Hungary is open to new regional cooperation initiatives, but wants to have a clear understanding of their objectives, how they operate, and what added value they bring to Hungary.

The statement also notes that the administration is engaged in intensive consultations with the United States, including on matters of energy security. The sanctions from which Hungary previously received a one-year exemption are also on the agenda, with efforts to have the Americans extend this exemption already underway.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently announced the launch of a regional initiative, the Carpathian Eight, and said that Hungary would be participating. It soon became clear, however, that this was not the case, which Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar also pointed out in a comment under the Ukrainian Foreign Minister's post.
