Magyar: Hungary strongly condemns the Russian drone attack in Romania

Hungary strongly condemns the Russian drone attack in Romania, Péter Magyar wrote on his Facebook page Friday morning.

According to the Hungarian Prime Minister, this latest Russian drone attack underscores that the unity of Europe and NATO is more important today than ever before. “In the city of Galați, Romania, two people were injured in an explosion when a Russian drone struck a residential building. Hungary most strongly condemns any attack that endangers the civilian population and leads to a violation of the territory and airspace of a sovereign EU and NATO member state.

Hungary expresses solidarity with Romania. We wish the injured a speedy recovery and support a full investigation into the incident,”

Magyar wrote.

Foreign Minister Anita Orbán also reacted to the events. “Yesterday’s Russian drone attack once again highlights that the unity of Europe and NATO is more important today than ever before,” she wrote in a social media post, also adding that Hungary categorically condemns any attack that endangers the civilian population and leads to a violation of the territory and airspace of a sovereign EU and NATO member state.

Defense Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi reiterated on his Facebook page that Hungary, along with its allies, condemns all forms of Russian aggression. “One of the key figures in NATO’s security is SACEUR, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, with whom I held consultations on this and other topics yesterday. He is the one who ensures the coordinated functioning of collective defense and the Alliance’s military readiness. NATO’s strength lies in unity, partnership, and shared responsibility. Hungary remains committed to its allies in order to safeguard the security of our country and Europe,” the Minister of Defense wrote.

The Russian drone crashed into a ten-story residential building early Friday morning in the town of Galati, near the Ukrainian border. Two people sustained minor injuries in the explosion. After the crash, a fire broke out in an apartment on the tenth floor of the building, and 70 people had to be evacuated from the building.

The Romanian Ministry of Defense said that the drone that crashed into a residential building in Galați was a Russian Geran-2 model. The Geran drones, manufactured by Russia, are based on the Iranian Shahed model. Since the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine, Friday’s incident was the first time a drone had crashed in a densely populated area in Romania.

“We stand in solidarity with the victims of the drone attack that occurred in neighboring Romania. The incident confirms that the war poses a direct threat to neighboring countries” – Viktor Orbán wrote on Facebook, though he failed to mention the fact that, according to the Romanian Ministry of Defense, the drone was of Russian origin.

The former prime minister called on the Hungarian government to "uphold the policy of neutrality established by the previous government and not to take a single step toward a pro-war Europe."
