Hungarian FM and Ukraine's Sybiha meet up in Sweden
Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha met in person on Friday in Helsingborg.
According to the Ukrainian Foreign Minister's post, they reviewed the first round of expert-level bilateral consultations on national minorities that took place this week; with the second round scheduled to be held next week.
"We both recognise the importance of progress on this track; we seek to find constructive solutions and achieve tangible results." Sybiha emphasized the critical importance of Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
“We agreed that the restoration of our dialogue is a positive development for both of our nations and all of Europe, as well as coordinated further bilateral contacts on all levels", the head of Ukrainian diplomacy wrote.
Anita Orbán also posted about the meeting, noting that she was spending the day at the meeting of NATO foreign ministers held in Helsingborg.
She also held talks with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. “It is our shared conviction that Europe can only remain strong and competitive if it builds on stable transatlantic relations, resilient economies, and a modern industrial base,” the Hungarian Foreign Minister wrote. Their discussions also focused on strengthening bilateral ties in the areas of the economy, energy, the defense industry, and digitalization.
Two days ago, Anita Orbán posted that online expert-level consultations between Hungary and Ukraine had begun, which she opened alongside Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Taras Kachka.
She emphasized that Hungary is committed to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
"Our foremost task in our bilateral relations is ensuring the consistent protection of the rights of national minorities. The Hungarian community in Transcarpathia is not only an important part of the relationship between the two countries, but also serves as a bridge between our peoples. Real progress requires open, honest, and professional dialogue, built on clear legal guarantees. I believe that today’s meeting could mark the beginning of a new process,” she wrote at the time.
