Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó has summoned the German Ambassador in Budapest to the Foreign Ministry, because in his opinion, Julia Gross's speech delivered on Wednesday evening was "completely unacceptable". "In her speech yesterday, Germany's ambassador to Budapest seriously interfered in Hungary's internal affairs in a way that violated our country's sovereignty," the Foreign Minister wrote in a Facebook post.
On Wednesday evening, Julia Gross attended a large reception in Budapest's Vigadó Palace to mark the Day of German Unity. When addressing the audience, many of whom were diplomats, she said that she believes the Hungarian government has strayed from the path of friendship between the two nations and that the delay in approving Sweden's accession to NATO was nothing more than a farce.
According to Szabad Európa's report, no one from the Hungarian government attended the event, only state secretaries and their deputies were present, who also left the room in protest during the ambassador's speech.
