Ryanair is going to appeal the consumer protection fine of 300 million forints imposed on them by the Hungarian government earlier in August – the airline announced in a statement. CEO Michael O’Leary reacted strongly once again, calling both the excess profit tax on airlines introduced by the Hungarian government, and the fact that the Justice Minister was informed about Ryanair’s fine before the airline idiotic.

According to O’Leary, EU law protects the airlines, and allows them to set their own prices, as well as pass taxes on to consumers.

In case the appeal is unsuccessful, Ryanair is prepared to take the case all the way to the Court of Justice of the European Union.

The statement also adds that political pressure is being exerted on Ryanair, as Justice Minister Judit Varga had announced the 300 million forint fine on Facebook before the airline was notified.
