What is going on in European politics today is completely disconnected from reality. It is a politics which completely disregards even the basic existential interests of its electorate – House Speaker of the Hungarian parliament, László Kövér declared in Martovce (Martos in Hungarian), Slovakia at the opening forum of the Esterházy Camp on Public Life (Esterházy Közéleti Tábor).

According to the state news agency (MTI), the Speaker spoke about the core values of national policy, as well as about the ongoing discussions on the future of the European Union in Brussels and the background of the war in Ukraine.

Regarding the discussions about the future of the EU, Kövér said: The ambitions behind this debate are not about how the EU should be structured, or how Europe can face the current challenges, but rather about how Europe should position itself so it's good for America.

"[The debate is about] how we should be the henchmen, the auxiliary forces of a United States which is struggling with the challenge that the world is no longer unipolar, but is instead moving towards the emergence of several centres of power" – he said.

In his opinion, the future of humanity will be decided by whether the relationship between these centres of power will be dominated by cooperation or competition.

The Speaker believes that the real cause of the war in Ukraine – which even Pope Francis has described as provoked – is not to be found in Donbass, nor in the tensions between Ukraine and Russia, but in the American strategy declared after the Second World War, according to which "America must be kept in, Russia out and Germany down".

The reason for the current situation is that the United States is dangerously close to losing its title as the world's number one power, as China will soon be overtaking it economically as well. There is also the American nightmare, which is that there would be a single economic area created, stretching from Portugal to East Asia, and those within it would create a free trade area as the economic centre of the world. "The intention is undoubtedly to disconnect Europe from this economic area, whose fault line is between Russia and the territories to its west," László Kövér explained.
