Hungarian FM and Marco Rubio sign agreement about joining forces to fight far-left organizations such as Antifa

Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán posted about the agreements she signed during her meeting with her U.S. counterpart, Marco Rubio. Orbán’s post revealed that she and Rubio had agreed on developments in the natural gas and oil industries, as well as on collaboration in law enforcement—though she did not specify exactly what the latter entails.
“With the Trump Peace Pipelines Framework memorandum of agreement, we are strengthening our collaboration on the development of regional natural gas and oil infrastructure,” she wrote.
The U.S. Department of State later posted on its website what the foreign ministers told the press after the two letters of intent were signed. According to Rubio, the law enforcement agreement is about the U.S. and Hungarian governments taking joint steps to prevent the resurgence of far-left terrorism. The U.S. Secretary of State said this problem has been ignored for far too long, adding: “we have to stop the way these groups target police departments and law enforcement, and ultimately critical infrastructure, historical landmarks – the foundations of a free society; that’s what they attack.”
The U.S. Secretary of State also spoke about how politically motivated violence and vandalism have recently been observed in both Europe and the United States. According to Rubio, the memorandum of understanding will improve the situation because it enhances cooperation and the sharing of information. He went on to say that several such movements have organized themselves into international networks. “They operate off the basis of an international network that seeks to destabilize Western societies, our systems, our culture, our civilization, ultimately. So we’ll work to track these cross-border networks and bring them to justice, and we want to thank Hungary for being such an important partner in Europe in this emerging threat”, Rubio said.
Anita Orbán said that this memorandum of understanding was signed in order to take action against violent far-left organizations. “It is important that under the existing law enforcement cooperation we will enhance the information sharing so that we prevent, detect, and prosecute any violence done by left-wing groups such as Antifa Ost both in the United States and Hungary,” said the Hungarian Foreign Minister.
In a Facebook video posted later, Anita Orbán also talked about the signed agreements. In the video, she stated that the agreement aimed to strengthen joint cooperation against extremist and violent left-wing organizations. According to the Hungarian FM, they agreed to exchange information in order to prevent such acts of terrorism in the United States and Hungary. “We’re talking about left-wing and far-left organizations such as Antifa Ost,” she said.
The meeting of Anita Orbán and Marco Rubio took place behind closed doors, with no press allowed to attend. Also present at the meeting were Allison M. Hooker, Assistant Secretary of State for Political Affairs, and Thomas G. DiNanno, Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security. We have sent questions about the details of the agreement to the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We will report on their response as soon as we receive it.
Last year, following the assassination of Charlie Kirk, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he would designate Antifa as a terrorist organization in the United States and called for an investigation into those involved in financing the movement. Although no evidence has yet emerged linking Kirk’s killer, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, to any organization, Trump and senior US officials have repeatedly blamed left-wing groups for creating a hostile environment toward conservatives in the United States.
