Hungarian FM requests Slovakia's assistance in securing Hungary's water supply

Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán held talks with members of the Slovak government regarding their assistance in securing Hungary’s water supply. Anita Orbán asked Slovak Deputy Prime Minister Tomáš Taraba to ensure that their experts do their utmost to maintain a steady water flow, as stated in the minister’s post.

“My Slovak colleague promised to do everything in his power to this end, despite the fact that Slovakia is also facing a significant water shortage. Hungary will receive the full, customary 400 m³/s of water to which it is entitled under international obligations,” wrote the Hungarian Foreign Minister. She also thanked Slovakia for their promise that, should rainfall arrive there sooner, they would provide Hungary with a portion of the excess water.

Anita Orbán also emphasized that the rumors claiming that neighboring countries are in any way responsible for the low water levels of the Danube in Hungary are false.

This is not the first time the Slovak government has offered assistance to Hungary amidst the current extreme heatwave. Last week, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that Slovakia is prepared to help Hungary in the event that the Paks Nuclear Power Plant needs to be temporarily shut down.
