Hungary only EU member state not backing UN resolution urging peace in Ukraine
The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for an end to the war and a just and lasting peace in Ukraine by a vote of 107 to 12, with 51 abstentions. Hungary was the only EU member state that did not support the draft, investigative journalist Szabolcs Panyi reported on his Facebook page.
The draft resolution was submitted by Ukraine, so it is not surprising that Russia was one of the 12 countries that voted against it (the others were Russian allies such as Belarus, North Korea, Cuba, Iran, and a few African countries). Among the major powers, the US and China abstained, as did India and Brazil. Hungary was the only EU member state to abstain.
The resolution expresses concern about Russian attacks on civilian targets, civilian facilities, and energy infrastructure, stands up for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and calls for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.
This is not the first case of this kind at the UN. A few months ago, following the Russian drone attack on Chernobyl, the Hungarian government similarly failed to support a resolution on international cooperation.
