Pro-war, anti-Trump European leaders will be meeting in Paris on Monday to try to block a peace deal on Ukraine, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in Astana, Kazakhstan. The foreign minister said that the inauguration of Donald Trump ushered in a completely new global political reality, which is favourable for both Hungary and Kazakhstan.
"Our two countries have always taken a pro-peace stance, we both have always pursued a patriotic, sovereignist political strategy, have always stood on the ground of normalcy and have always put national interests first," he said.
Szijjártó said that it was the two countries' common interest to bring the war in Ukraine to an end as soon as possible, as both Hungary and Kazakhstan have suffered serious loss as a result of the conflict, and according to him, Donald Trump and his pro-peace policy currently present the best chance for this.
"It is for this reason that we welcome the resumption of the top-level Russian-American dialogue. We are delighted and reassured to know that Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have spoken at length. And we were also delighted and reassured to learn that, as a continuation of these talks, the two foreign ministers, Marco Rubio and Sergey Lavrov, have already discussed future options for Russian-US cooperation and a resolution of the conflict in Ukraine," he said.
Speaking at the security conference in Munich on Saturday, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said that French President Emmanuel Macron would be calling an extraordinary European summit within days because of Donald Trump. Citing two EU officials, Politico has reported that the meeting could be held in Paris as early as Monday.
On Monday morning, Fidesz communications director Tamás Menczer posted on Facebook that he did not think Ukraine should join NATO and the EU. "Should Ukraine join NATO? Should Ukraine join the EU? It should not! The Trump administration has made it clear that Ukraine's membership in NATO is not a realistic option," Menczer wrote, adding that the new US president has made it clear that it is not realistic for Ukraine to get back all of its occupied territories.
