From the meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó travelled straight to Washington to meet with Mike Waltz, President-elect Donald Trump's future national security advisor.
Szijjártó noted that they were very pleased when they heard that he was being considered for the post of national security advisor, given their previous relationship. There are very strict rules on what future advisors can discuss during the transition period that follows the US presidential election, so – as Szijjártó explained – this time he discussed geopolitical matters with Waltz, who is a former member of the Foreign Affairs Committee. "It was a friendly meeting, like one between old acquaintances", Szijjártó explained.
The Foreign Minister also discussed with Waltz that the time to end the war between Russia and Ukraine had never felt so close, but the threat of escalation had never been so high either, he said. "It is good to know that peace, the importance of family, respect for sovereignty and combating illegal migration provide a solid basis for the friendship between US Republicans and Hungarian patriots," Szijjártó said in his Facebook post.
