The Austrian Social Security Office published the latest, December statistics on foreign workers in Austria in mid-January. As Világgazdaság writes, according to the latest data, more than 4,000 Hungarians went to work in the neighbouring country between November and December 2023.

Österreichische Sozialversicherung only counts registered, full-time employees. These numbered 973,193 in the last month of 2023, an increase of about five percent compared to the 929,739 foreign workers registered in December 2022. According to the statistics from the Social Security Office, most foreign workers in the Austrian labour market are German nationals. Last month, there were 127 599, compared to 123 993 in November.

In addition to German workers, the number of Hungarians employed in Austria also increased significantly between November and December. While in November there were 118 930 Hungarians registered as employed in full-time jobs in Austria,

in December, there were 4,102 more – bringing the total to 123,032, which is an increase of almost 3.5 percent. This means that one in eight foreign workers in the Austrian labour market is Hungarian.

On the one hand, this is not overly surprising, since many Hungarians have traditionally been taking jobs in Austria's tourism industry during the winter season. At the same time, Világgazdaság reports that while more and more Hungarians have been finding jobs in Austria, many workers from other countries in the region – including Slovaks, Poles, Romanians and Slovenians – have been leaving Austria by the thousands.

A similar increase has been observed once before, in 2022. That year, the number of Hungarians working in Austria rose by 4,029 in the space of a month, reaching 115,439.
