European Chief Prosecutor: As soon as we wanted to investigate Hungarian politicians, the EPPO suddenly wasn’t competent

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office may launch its first investigation in Hungary next year, according to what the European Chief Prosecutor told Telex. Laura Kövesi came to Budapest to hold talks with ministers of the Tisza government and representatives of the Prosecutor General’s Office about the country’s joining the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. Kövesi is a true heavyweight in fighting corruption. Under her leadership, the Romanian Anti-Corruption General Directorate became a true success story: two former prime ministers, dozens of ministers, and a large number of other politicians and mayors were brought to trial. She was elected the first Chief Prosecutor of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office in 2019. In her interview with Telex, we asked her which cases they are planning to investigate in Hungary, what her relationship with the Orbán government was like, what message she has for Péter Magyar, and what she thinks about one of Tisza’s most important campaign promises: the National Office for Asset Recovery and Protection.
