Arte: Fewer migrant arrivals in the EU – but at what cost?

Frontex reported a remarkable 25% reduction in irregular border crossings in 2025, which Europe sees as proof that deals with partner countries like Mauritania, Tunisia and Algeria to deter migrants are working. However, rights groups warn that people are being detained and abused in the EU’s partner countries, far from European shores. Is Europe willing to pay that price?

This programme is produced by the European platform ARTE and available in 10 languages through the European media partnership EMOVE Hub. The hub is coordinated by ARTE and includes Balkan Insight (BIRN), Sinopsis (BIRN Romania), El País (ES), Gazeta Wyborcza (PL), Internazionale (IT), Ir, (LV), Kathimerini (GR), Le Soir (BE) and Telex (HU). The partnership receives EU-funding following DG CNECT’s call for European Media Hubs within the framework of the EU’s Multimedia Actions.
