A total of 18 Transcarpathian families have so far received emergency aid from the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade after a family member of Hungarian nationality or with Hungarian roots died as a soldier in the fighting in Ukraine. On Monday, the families of two soldiers from Mukachevo received emergency aid at the Hungarian Consulate General in Uzhhorod.

At the presentation of the aid, Consul László Kuti conveyed the condolences and sympathy of the Hungarian government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "The Hungarian community of Transcarpathia is once again in mourning. Today we handed over support to the relatives of two soldiers of Hungarian descent who died in the fighting in Eastern Ukraine. They were both young, one of them had not even had the chance to start a family. Unfortunately, we have had to gather for such occasions several times recently, but it is my hope that we will have to do so less often in the coming period," Consul László Kuti said.

One of the fallen soldiers, Ottó Lengyel, who volunteered to fight in the autumn of 2022, died in Bahmut, Donetsk region, while Miklós Guti, who had also volunteered, died near Kreminna in the Donetsk region, while on duty. (Kárpáti Igaz Szó)

Commenting on Hungarians in the war, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has said that “we are among the victims of this war, and Brussels should respect that”. We have previously reported on members of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine fighting on the frontlines of the war, and even spoke with some right by the frontline.
