In some respects, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán gave a very serious speech at the meeting of the governing Fidesz-KDNP faction alliance in Balatonfüred on Wednesday. According to the pro-government newspaper Magyar Nemzet, the Prime Minister listed who the current opponents are:
- pro-war international interest groups: US President Joe Biden and the US administration, pro-war Brussels bureaucrats and pro-war politicians;
- the international speculators seeking to profit in wartime, among whom he specifically named George Soros, "who wrote years ago that the Central European countries should be used as a proxy for a war against Russia, because Central Europeans are more tolerant of the human sacrifice that war entails than the West";
- the dollar left led by Gyurcsány (who, according to Viktor Orbán, have been paid off).
According to the pro-government newspaper, the prime minister's speech was mainly about the war, and from leaked information
it appears that Orbán did not blame Russia at all for the situation that has developed, including the war and its escalation,
the economic crisis, the energy prices and the rampant inflation, nor for what he sees as the weakened positions of Europe.
Russia came up twice during the speech. On the one hand, Orbán said that there can be no winner in the war: Russia cannot lose because it is a nuclear power, and a nuclear power cannot be cornered because of the threat of nuclear war, but it cannot win either because 'the whole Western world has lined up behind Ukraine'.
On the other hand, he mentioned Russia in the context of the fact that, according to Orbán, "Russia and the Western multinational corporations have made a lot of money from the inflation brought on by the sanctions", while "in less than a year, Europe has lost its independence, its economic and military power".
Much of the speech was devoted to criticizing the West. "Europe has been weakened in the last year because the Biden administration is asserting its interests in Brussels without limitations at the expense of European interests," the government newspaper quotes the prime minister as saying.
For example, on the economic difficulties and inflation the prime minister said:
"Brussels has brought this trouble on Europe, including Hungary".
Magyar Nemzet writes that the prime minister announced – not surprisingly, in light of his annual State of the Nation speech on Saturday – that there is no reason for Hungary to change its attitude towards the war, meaning that "the [Hungarian] pro-peace position must be defended against the Biden administration and Brussels".
According to Orbán, the only morally correct position regarding the war is the pro-peace position of Fidesz-KDNP, "therefore a ceasefire and peace talks are needed immediately", and, just as importantly, "Hungary's military capabilities must be strengthened, because peace requires strength."
